Three strategy and sim mainstays got meaningful updates this week, and not one of them was a new game. Civilization VII reworked diplomacy, Manor Lords tore up its construction system, and a cosy repair sim quietly banked 700,000 wishlists before launch. If your backlog already feels full, that is good news: this week rewards patience with games you own rather than pressure to buy anything new.

🎯 Quick Wins
Civilization VII’s Update 1.4.2 reworked how peace actually works, adding gold and influence trading to peace deals plus toggleable victory types. If you have been ending wars on bad terms out of frustration, this patch lets you renegotiate properly. Our Civilization VII diplomacy guide breaks down how leader personalities shape these new peace offers.
ReStory: Chill Electronics Repairs launched on 6 August with 700,000 wishlists already banked. It is a cosy Y2K repair-shop sim, not a strategy game, but it fits the same unwind-after-work slot as a light Cities: Skylines II session. Worth a look if you want something with a shorter save-to-finish loop this week.
Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition wrapped its Baltic Powers open beta on 6 August, with the Poles and Danes confirmed for the full expansion on 10 September. No action needed yet, but mark the date if you play AoE3 multiplayer, since new civilisations reshape the meta fast.

🧠 Strategy Spotlight
Manor Lords’ beta branch (0.8.097) rewrites how building works, and it is the biggest change to the game since early access launched. Construction now splits into basic and advanced tiers, and advanced structures need skilled builders staffed in a new Construction Yard, which raises build speed by 50% when properly crewed. Oxen can haul timber in bulk, so logistics planning now matters as much as placement, according to the official patch notes.
The economy update matters just as much. Cattle can be bred for milk and beef, milk becomes cheese through a new artisan profession, and oats need growing for both people and livestock through winter. Active Recipes replace the old Production Focus system entirely, which means existing saves will need their production chains rebuilt once this reaches the stable branch.
For players who have been treating Manor Lords like a pretty village sim, this update pushes it closer to the logistics-heavy end of the genre, alongside Anno and Cities: Skylines II. If you already enjoy planning supply chains in Cities: Skylines II’s recent patches, this rework will feel familiar rather than punishing.
The beta is opt-in on Steam now. The main early access build is expected by the end of August, giving casual players a few weeks to prepare before it becomes mandatory.
👀 Worth Watching
Anno 117: Pax Romana’s Hippodrome DLC lands 20 August alongside Update 2.0, adding chariot racing and new specialists to Roman cities. If you have been holding off starting a new province, that is a reasonable point to wait for. Anno veterans who cut their teeth on Anno 1800’s trade loops will recognise the pacing shift a new venue building brings to a save.
Manor Lords’ construction and cattle overhaul is still beta-only as of this week, with the main early access branch expected by the end of August. If you are not comfortable with beta bugs, that is the version worth waiting for rather than opting in now.
💬 Community Corner
Players testing Manor Lords’ new beta have already converged on a simple staffing trick. Fully crewing a Construction Yard before starting an advanced-tier building unlocks the 50% speed bonus, so scouting spare villagers into the yard first avoids half-built stone churches sitting idle for seasons. It saves the frustration of watching a build stall because your ox carts have nothing to haul, and it is worth testing on the beta branch before the update goes wide.
⏭️ Next Week’s Prep
Two dates to watch: Anno 117’s Hippodrome DLC on 20 August, and Manor Lords’ construction overhaul potentially reaching the stable branch before month’s end. If either lands early, we will cover it in detail. Catch up on last week’s issue if you missed Cities: Skylines II’s first DLC or Stronghold Crusader’s new warlord, and we will see you back here next Friday.
