In recent news, Sony has reversed its plans to make PlayStation Network (PSN) account linking mandatory for PC players of Helldivers 2. This announcement comes after a wave of player backlash in reaction to the originally proposed changes, scheduled to take effect on May 6. The decision meant that PC players of the popular sci-fi shooter can breathe easy knowing that the PSN account linking will now be optional.

Arrowhead Games and the Community Responds
Arrowhead Games CEO and Helldivers Creative Director, Johan Pilestedt, appreciated Sony’s flexibility with the decision. Pilestedt commended the Helldivers 2 player community, “I am impressed by the willpower of the Helldivers 2 community and your ability to collaborate”. He further praised PlayStation’s efforts saying, “I want to thank our partners and friends at PlayStation for quickly and effectively making the decision to leave PSN linking optional” (source: Arrowhead Game Studios Official State).
Original Decision Came Under Fire
Sony’s decision to backtrack comes on the heels of backlash from players regarding the PSN account-linking requirement. Steam gamers reportedly felt deceived by Sony’s unexpected announcement, especially since their counterparts, PS4 and PS5 console owners, were not subjected to similar requirements.
